The Zollverein Museum

The Zollverein Museum was a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once a major center of coal production. As a group, we visited this impressive museum and learned a lot about its history.

When we arrived, we split into three groups and each group had its own tour guide. Without even entering the museum we could tell how powerful these machines had once been. When the tour started, the groups were taken to different places to begin their tours. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, and they were very good at explaining everything we saw. The tour guides didn’t just give out the facts, they told us all the stories behind this museum. The stories of the people who worked with those machines for long hours, day after day. The tour guides explained the problems the workers faced and then explained they solutions that were implemented.

After hearing about the history of the machines and the worker’s stories, the tour guides led us into a big room full of artifacts. Some of these artifacts were older than others but they all held important facts and history in them. The last thing we did was look at impressive ancient fossils. The tour guides patiently answered all of our questions and shared more facts with us. Before we knew it, we had toured the whole museum and learned so many stories about it. This was an important experience that exposed us to the meaningful history of this coal production site.
