Personal Entry – Garden Parties

One thing about Germany is that during the summer season it does not get dark until 10:30pm. This means we often stay out late without even realizing it. When we came to Marie’s garden it was around 7:00pm and we left around 11:30. during that time we had a garden party. Everyone had a choice of soda or tea (I got Fanta) and we all sat around a campfire and talked. After a while they brought out chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers! Obviously, we made s’mores and roasted the marshmallows. My marshmallow actually caught on fire so that was fun. Some of the Germans ordered pizza– which was a rectangle for some reason– and a couple of us danced to Cotton Eyed Joe, the Cha Cha Slide and some other dancing songs.

I think it’s interesting that a lot of German people have gardens that are completely separate from their houses on a different plot of land. One of the Germans explained to me that this was because they don’t have as much space to build ‘out’ which is why they build ‘up’ and have such tall houses. But building up does not leave much space for a back garden.

This party was so much fun and the memories will stick with me for a long time.
