Meeting the Host family

Honestly when I was in America, I was a bit scared to meet my host family–I mean staying in a stranger’s house for two weeks is not something most people would volunteer for– but when I landed it was quite lovely and we clicked instantly. My German partner was very excited and gave me a tour of the whole house, including the basement. This was my first time even seeing a basement because we don’t have them in Florida due to how likely the ground is to flood. It definitely felt odd to think I was actually underground. We were home for a bit and then I was able to meet her father who took us to the grocery store and bought some German chocolates for me to try. After the grocery store, we came home where I met her mother. Her whole family is very sweet, and I have been able to practice my conversational German skills. This whole trip I have felt so welcome and comfortable;  including at school. When we go to school, we shadow our German partner for many of the classes, but they also take us to English classes where we can talk to other German students about cultural differences and how life in the U.S. is. I’ve been having a great time, and I can’t wait to make more memories.

On the morning of Friday, 23rd of May 2025, we all arrived to school with our German host students, and met up with everyone else in the homeroom, on the ground floor of the main building. My host student and I arrived early enough to eat some bread another host student had brought, and waited to make sure all of the exchange pairs had come. Once everyone had entered the room, the teachers announced we would be splitting up into two groups to do the tour. Everyone split up, and went different ways, though we crossed paths multiple times during the tour. I personally couldn’t understand what was being said very well, as it was a large group, and I didn’t understand where we were going in the slightest. But, as long as the Germans know where to go, and all of the Americans stick with their German partners, it’ll be fine.
